Abstract

This is a study of speech acts in the conversations of New Interchange 1, 2, and 3. The aim of the study is to examine speech act types in the conversations investigated. Both quantitative approach and qualitative approach are employed with the assistance of descriptive, contrastive, analytic, and synthetic methods to help work out the best possible fndings. The data consist of a total of 784 turns comprising 8126 words in 97 conversations of New Interchange 1, 2, and 3. The study shows interesting results concerning speech act types. To be more specifc, although there is a strong tendency for combination of different speech act types, single speech act groups are preferred with the predominance of representatives.
