Abstract

Current status and development of parenteral nutrition in the Ukraine are reviewed. Pharmacological and clinical characteristics of basic preparations for different nutrition types are provided: nitrogen type (amino acid mixtures and protein hydrolysates), carbohydrate type (glucose, sorbitol, fructose, xylitol), and lipid type (lipid emulsions). Information on the most common preparations manufactured abroad is presented. Experience of therapeutic parenteral nutrition in the Ukraine is analyzed, as are possibilities of domestic manufacturing of those substances. Two drugs are described which have successfully passed clinical trials: "amikin" for nitrogen nutrition and "lipidin-2" for the lipid one. It is emphasized that catheter-aided enteral alimentation and parenteral nutrition are not competing methods, but that they have differentiated indications for use.
