Abstract

Trials were carried out at 2 State farms in the USSR on pigs aged 2.5 to 4 months and naturally infected with Trichuris. In the first trial 48 of 66 pigs received 0.1 g/kg body-weight of Noxide in feed every 24 hours on consecutive days. The cure rate was 81.8% and intensities were reduced by 96.2%. In the 2nd trial, 35 pigs were divided into 4 groups (one control); the first (10 animals) received 0.1 g/kg of Noxide in feed for 4 consecutive days. The cure rate was 90.0% and the intensities were reduced by 99.6%. The 2nd group (10) was injected in the neck with Bubulin at the rate of 0.075 ml/kg per day for 2 consecutive days and the 3rd (5) received a single injection of 0.22 ml/kg of Promintic. Both were 100% effective. Side effects were studied in 39 pigs aged 5 to 6 months; treatment was as in the 2nd trial. Distress symptoms were observed early in the Noxide treatment, which was therefore discontinued. Bubulin gave no significant side effects. Promintic injections, however, produced a painful inflammation and the animals went off their food for 24 hours. It is concluded that Bubulin is the most acceptable anthelmintic in veterinary practice.
