Abstract

The factors decreasing the fertilizing capacity of cryopreserved semen of Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas were discussed. The survival, motility and morphological damage of the spermatozoa in cryopreserved semen were observed. However, a prominent decrease in fertilizing capacity of cryopreserved semen could not be explained by the decrease in survival and motility of the spermatozoa. The morphological damage at acrosome and the formation of sperm aggregation were recognized in cryopreserved semen through the observation under SEM. © 1990, The Japanese Society of Fisheries Science.
