Tibial Eminence Fracture

Abstract

Avulsion fractures of the tibial eminence (AFTE) are rare injuries, most of which occur in skeletal immature patients, between 8 and 14 years. At this age, the tibial eminence, where the anterior cruciate ligament inserts, has not yet ossified, with the chondro-epiphyseal junction being the most frequent point of failure. They occur after rotational mechanisms of pivoting type or hyperextension of the knee, resulting in osteochondral avulsion of the insertion of the anterior cruciate ligament. Magnetic resonance imaging is recommended, and surgical treatment seeks to restore joint stability.
