Abstract

Research studies on forage losses by rangeland grasshoppers have been reviewed. Factors that relate to forage losses are discussed (food preference, density, habitat, grazing influence, weather, human influence, and physiological influences). A listing is given for the most destructive rangeland grasshopper species, their area of potential damage, and their preferred food plants. Estimated amounts of forage lost are listed for populations and certain economic species. A means of predicting forage losses once certain information is obtained is suggested.
