Abstract
The article discusses the role of subject librarians in academic libraries in Great Britain. It explores the 20th century development of and rationale for subject librarianship in British academic libraries, and considers shifts in library organizational structure, required education, and professional philosophies. Changes in subject librarians' job functions from an emphasis on subject expertise to communication, didactic, and technology skills since the 1990s are also addressed.
