Aristote et la Bible : d’une autorité à l’autre

Abstract

En parcourant la littérature philosophique des derniers siècles du Moyen Âge, nous posons la question du transfert des pratiques exégétiques aux commentaires scolastiques d’Aristote : y a-t-il un emprunt des méthodes exégétiques de l’auctoritas biblique à l’auctoritas aristotélicienne ? Sur la base d’un échantillon (les livre VIII et IX de l’Éthique à Nicomaque), on envisage d’abord la manière dont la matrice biblique investit le champ philosophique, notamment aristotélicien, en repérant la présence des citations scripturaires dans l’arsenal argumentatif des commentaires d’Aristote. Dans un second temps, on essaie de montrer comment les mécanismes de l’exégèse aristotélicienne se lisent à la lumière des techniques exégétiques scripturaires pour y saisir les emprunts et les reprises.Medieval Authorities : Aristote and the Bible. A reading of the philosophicalliteratureof the last three centuries of the Middle Ages raises the question of the transference of exegetical practices to the Aristotelian scholastic commentaries (especially the Nicomachean Ethics). Is there any borrowing of exegetical methods from Biblical auctoritas towards Aristotelian auctoritas ? We will focus our observations on the category of Aristotelian commentaries. First, we will show how the Bible approaches the philosophical domain, and especially Aristotelian philosophy, by locating scriptural citations of the Bible in the philosophical discussion of the commentators. Then, we will examine how the Aristotelian exegesis is shaped by the technical scriptural exegesis.
