Abstract

The main phenomena associated with the fracture of glass are reviewed: why, normally, it is nothing like as strong as it ought to be and what can be done to improve practical strengths; how the study of the propagation of macroscopic cracks has helped to solve some problems, but revealed others; and how, if not why, some of the features to be found on fracture surfaces are formed. The controversial proposal that flow might play a role in the fracture of glass is discussed.
