Abstract

Newspaper publishing began in Europe during the seventeenth century and expanded across the continent and to North America in the eighteenth century. Government officials tried to control the press, but were not always successful. Enlightenment ideas influenced the content of periodicals and supplied justifications for the rights of journalists. Democratic thinking was especially evident in the United States where federal and state constitutions protected freedom of the press.
