Abstract
My goal in this article is to show how Rawls's theory of justice can be extended to health and health care. In previous work, I haveproceded to three successive extensions of Rawls's ideas. The first one depends on the relationship between health and fair equality of opportunity. The second extension depends on a serendipitous relationship between Rawls's principles of justice as fairness and the social determinants of health that has been revealed in the social epidemiology literature of the last three decades. The third extension draws on Rawls's contributions to democratic deliberation and his views about procedural justice, and it applies them to the problem of meeting health needs fairly when we cannot meet them all. The three extensions, taken together, provide the basis for a powerful theory of justice and health. © 2009 Presses de Sciences Po.
