Abstract
A growing number of people perform tasks supported by systems that are built through the composition of software components. Despite the popularity of component-based software development and related tools, their use remains complicated for experts, not to mention for end users. This paper provides an evaluation of composition tools focused on end users. A major contribution of this assessment is that, given a set of characteristics that are intrinsic to compositionbased software development and to end users, a set of relevant functions and heuristics to detect general problems of functional suitability and usability are proposed. These functions and heuristics provide a knowledge base that can be extended in specific application domains to improve the design of composition tools.
