Abstract

Since the nineteen sixties, most of the countries in South-East Asia have made significant progress both in terms of economic growth and social wellbeing. Agricultural productivity, industrialisation and urban development have leapt forwards, whilst major successes have been achieved in the battle against poverty, especially in Indonesia. However, the social and regional disparities remain wide and have even broadened. The 1997-98 financial crisis, whose negative economic consequences have begun to be reabsorbed, has nevertheless left deep scars, which continue to threaten social achievements, once again above all in Indonesia.
