The purpose of this study is to understand better how historians justify the type of contribution they add to general knowledge. The way Fernand Braudel tackled the issue of time in his writings on "long stretches of time" is indeed very telling. It shows that far from offering womething new on the topic, the purpose of his writings is to defend a research programme within the subject and compared with other fields in human sciences. Arguments are adapted to the issues at stake at the various moments of Braudel's career. Works on time go side by side with the attempt at generalising made by successful historians. They feed on a memory of history suited to the struggles of competition opposing historians with one another. Licence portant sur le document : Tous droits réservés.
