Abstract

Eszopiclone, the dextrorotatory stereoisomer of zopiclone, has long been introduced as a hypnotic in the USA. In Germany, eszopiclone was only recently launched on the market. The differences between eszopiclone and zopiclone are minor. Both drugs are well-suited for the short-term treatment of severe sleep onset and sleep maintenance disorders. Eszopiclone has been shown in two studies to remain effective and not to develop tolerance when used continuously for six months. It is therefore possible in special cases to extend the treatment period to six months. Data on longer use are lacking for zopiclone. However, this also applies to all other hypnotics approved in the European Union and to all substances that are used off-label in the indication of insomnia.
