Abstract
Introduction As of July 2021, the possession and trade of sex dolls with a childlike appearance have become punishable in Germany. In addition to moral reasons, there are concerns that the availability of such dolls could normalize or even encourage sexual activity with children, leading to an increase in sexual violence against children. There is no empirical data to support this assumption. Objectives The aim of this study is to present the debate on child-like sex dolls and to document the reported consequences of a ban on child-like sex dolls for those affected. Methods The written statements of N = 40 persons affected by the ban on sex dolls with childlike appearance, which were collected through open-ended questions in an online survey, were analyzed with regard to the resulting consequences. Results Users most frequently mentioned (negative) effects on their (mental) health. Increased insecurity and perceived social and political discrimination were also reported. Participants reported an increase in problematic behaviour, such as viewing child sexual abuse images again, and that they were no longer able to live out their sexuality legally. Conclusion From the perspective of those affected, the ban on child sex dolls has a negative impact on their lives and the risk of sexualized violence against children. The available data do not provide any evidence that the tightening of the law serves to protect children, although the study design has limitations in this respect.
