Abstract

Diagnostic laparoscopy is the procedure of choice to evaluate peritoneal surface malignancies. It has a significant higher sensitivity and specificity to detect peritoneal metastasis compared to other radiologic examinations, e.g., CT scan or MRI. The sensitivity and specificity of laparoscopy in gastric cancer patients is 74-100% and 83-100%, respectively. The major limitations of this technique are limited observation due to peritoneal adhesions after previous surgical procedures, the invasiveness with the risk of organ injury, and the potential development of port-site metastasis.
