Abstract
Letters presented here are the only fragment of the exchange between Władysław Panas and Yuri Lotman, preserved in a private archive. The relationship between the scholars was initiated in 1976, the year Panas worked in Moscow on his doctoral dissertation. These letters shed a new light on important and partly ignored or forgotten tendencies in totman's thought. Also, their historical dimension is quite crucial here. One shall separately consider an exceptional, hand-written note (all letters consistently typed) on the election of the Pope John Paul 2nd. The selection is accompanied by a copy of a letter from Panas to Lotman from March 12th, 1979.
