Abstract

Sintering of CuO compacts has been studied and the basic mechanical properties of polycrystalline CuO have been determined. Specimens of 90% density can be fabricated by sintering CuO powder at 1010°C for ~24hr. From data for 85-90%-dense specimens, the following elastic properties have been calculated for 100%-dense specimens: E = 125 ± 5 GPa, G = 47 ± 2 GPa, v = 0.31. The fracture toughness of 85-90% dense specimens was 5.0±0.6 MPaVm; the strengths of the densest specimens were related to grain size. The thermal-expansion coefficient from 300 to 1073 K was 1.15 × 10-5°C-1. © 1990, Walter de Gruyter. All rights reserved.
