Evaluation of Vitamin D Deficiency in Patients with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Abstract

Back Ground: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS), the most common chronic peripheral entrapment neuropathy, occurred as a result of compression of the median nerve as it passes in the carpal tunnel under the transverse carpal ligament. The vitamin D (Vit D) is the essential factor in neuromuscular function and bone metabolism. Aim of study: The aim of this study is to estimate the association between Vit D and CTS. Patients and methods: The study was conducted in the unit of neurophysiology at Merjan Medical City and Al-Imam Al-Sadiq Hospital in Babylon province. One hundred fifty individuals (75 CTS patients with 75 age and gender matched controls) were incorporated in this case control study during the period from September/ 2017 to March /2018. All participants underwent Full history, neurological examination, Vit D level and nerve conduction study. Results: There is a significant correlation between vitamin D deficiency and CTS (P value =0.00). The body mass index (BMI) have a significant correlation with CTS and vitamin D (P value equals 0.03 and 0.003 respectively) . Conclusion: The study concludes that vitamin D deficiency is significantly associated with and may trigger CTS. Additionally, a significant correlation was concluded for the BMI with CTS and vitamin D deficiency. The present discoveries demonstrate that Vit D levels ought to be evaluated in CTS patients.
