Abstract

Discrimination and, as a consequence, social exclusion suffered by transvestites and transsexuals can limit and exclude their access also to health services. As a way to combat discrimination against this population, the use of the social name in health services is guaranteed among the rights of users of the Brazilian Public Health System (form Portuguese, SUS). We aim to discuss the use of the social name in the SUS as a tool for effecting the reception, humanization and integral care of transvestites and transsexuals through the elaboration of a theoretical- reflexive essay. The categories of analysis were chosen: the reception and promotion of access to health through the social name; The social name as a tool for the humanization of care; And the social name as the basis for integral care. We understand that the social name presents itself as the gateway of transvestites and transsexuals to the SUS. From the realization of this right by the professionals, respecting and making available means for their use orally and in the medical records and documents, the fulfilment of health actions is facilitated, asserting the rights of citizenship and health for these users.
