Abstract

An interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) is a combination of two polymers, where at least one of the polymers is synthesized and/or crosslinked in the immediate presence of the other. Biomaterials are being formulated by reacting silicone with polyurethane. A wide range of medical applications are being explored, from joints and bones to artificial lungs. Materials and properties are reviewed.
