Abstract
During the last fifty years, major changes have affected the interaction between the French urban society and nature. The uses of all green areas remain traditional and are still socially differentiated. But whereas urban green spaces meet specific needs, forests are mainly seen as the symbol of true nature. Through the representation of the "forest as nature", its functions in French culture go far beyond recreation.
