The heronries census: 1972-1977 population changes and a review

Abstract

A summary is given of the observed changes in the numbers of occupied Grey Heron nests in England and Wales between 1972 and 1977. Numbers have continued to increase overall (especially in southern England), to the biggest-ever calculated total of 5, 3005, 400. A short summary of trends over the last 50 years is given also. The population had recovered fully from the effects of the 1961/62 and 1962/63 cold winters by 1970, but it took seven years to do so (compared with two-three years after previous setbacks). © 1979 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
