Abstract

What makes a musician a professional one? Where is located the borderline between amateur and professional? In this paper, we seek to understand how is the organization and functioning of the orchestra musician profession, trying to analyze what are the legitimated social criteria that define a musician as a professional. In short, we investigate, what is effectively relevant to a person become an orchestra musician and insert himself professionally? Diploma, curriculum or performance? Our research points to the existence of a specific logic operation of the musical-artistic field, in which professional dimension is directly related to the know-how to do/know-how to play, to the quality of practice and musical accomplishment, aspects translated in the dimension of performance.
