Abstract

Damping is one of the critical properties for the resultant building materials as well as for controlling the noise in the aircraft, machines, and other structural components. The demand for materials with superior damping properties and effective frequency reduction has gained importance in various applications like fuselage and wing panels of aircraft, helicopter rotor blades, automobiles and marine structures. The present study investigates how fiber interwoven patterns influence the damping and vibration characteristics of laminated composite materials, specifically Kevlar/basalt, Kevlar/glass, and Kevlar/basalt reinforced with aluminum oxide (Al2O3) nanoparticles. Free vibration analysis is carried out using the half-power bandwidth method to evaluate the vibration behavior of these composite laminates. Three different fiber interwoven patterns (1 × 1, 3 × 3 and 5 × 5) are designed for each of these materials. The results have showed that the weave pattern significantly impacts the damping and vibration properties of these composite materials. A comparative analysis of the nine laminated composites is performed, focusing on natural frequency, damping factor, and loss factor.
