Reviews the book, Treating Mental Illness and Behavior Disorders in Children and Adults with Mental Retardation by Anton Dosen and Kenneth Day (see record 2001-06702-000). The authors describe their purpose in writing this book "to provide a source for all disciplines working in the field of mental health care for mentally retarded people, including psychiatrists, general medical practitioners, nurses, psychologists, educationalists, teachers, social workers, and other medical specialists" (Page xv). Practitioners in the field of mental retardation will be pleasantly surprised with the richness and usefulness of information on clinical approaches from the perspective of mental health clinicians. Practitioners in the field of psychiatric rehabilitation should find this book especially helpful in guiding them through some of the unique challenges that may initially seem like obstacles but in reality are just differences. These differences can be easily overcome with flexibility, experience and adaptation. To those who venture down this path, the rewards of truly knowing the individual with mental retardation far outweigh any discomfort with a new style, adaptation, or extra effort.
