Prognostic significance of interleukin 6 serum levels in patients with ovarian cancer

Abstract

High levels of IL-6 were found in 50% of 114 patients with primary ovarian cancer. IL-6 sensitivity was lower than that of CA 125, and the combination of both assays did not increase the sensitivity of CA 125 alone. However, elevated IL-6 serum levels were correlated with a poor prognosis since patients with low IL-6 levels had a better survival than patients with high IL-6 levels (P = 0.0009). Multivariate analysis revealed that IL-6 positivity has an independent value. © 1995 Stockton Press. All rights reserved.
