Abstract

Raichur district, which falls in the north interior sector of Karnataka has been facing a lot of water management problems starting from severe drought conditions, to contaminated use of groundwater resources. With the incising of more and more aquifers being mapped for Arsenic and other heavy metals contamination, the need for surface water has been increased among the people of Raichur district. The work in this paper is on the Drought prediction and analysis of the area, for planning and execution of water resource development activities. The rainfall data analysis is done by Double mass curve and moving average curve by considering the rainfall data of the past 25 years recorded at respective rain gauge stations. The analysis of drought conditions is done by IMD and SPI methods based on data collected from the rain gauges installed at five different places in our study area. The drought recurrence graph has been plotted and the return period equation is calculated to understand the statistical probability of drought occurrence.
