Abstract

"This book, the first full-length text on the subject, explores the everyday use of music listening while driving a car. It presents the relationship between cars and music in an effort to understand how music behaviour in the car can either enhance driver safety or place the driver at increased risk of accidents. A great deal of work has been done to investigate and reduce driver distraction and inattention but this book is the first to focus on in-cabin aural backgrounds of music as a contributing factor to human error and traffic violation."--Provided by publisher. Automobility; Car culture and popular music -- Background music in everyday life; The listener and effects of music on listeners -- In-car audio culture; The benefits of driving with music -- Contraindications to in-car music listening -- Ill-effects of in-car music listening -- Implications, countermeasures, and applications; Music alternatives for increased driver safety -- Postscript.
