Midiendo el bienestar de los países: Índice de Progreso Social y PIB

Abstract

Based on the contributions of Stiglitz et al. (2009) the Social Progress Index (SPI), a comprehensive measure of a country’s performance, was created. This paper proposes an alternative form of calculation and analyzes the relationship of the index with variables such as GDP or other measures of subjective well-being. The main results indicate that the new method of calculation provides more homogeneous results in terms of the classification of countries, compared to the original index. Thus, middle-income countries are the most susceptible to change, and the opportunities dimension is the one that would require special attention due to its low score and potential for improvement. Moreover, this dimension, together with GDP, has a statistically significant relationship with happiness (considered as a proxy for subjective well-being).A partir de las aportaciones de Stiglitz et al. (2009) se crea el Índice de Progreso Social/Social Progress Index (IPS), una medida integral del desempeño de un país. En este trabajo se propone una forma alternativa de cálculo y se analiza la relación del índice con variables tales como el PIB y otras medidas de bienestar subjetivo. Los principales resultados indican que el nuevo método de cálculo proporciona resultados más homogéneos en cuanto a la clasificación de los países, respecto al índice original. Así, los países de ingresos medios son los más susceptibles a los cambios, y la dimensión de oportunidades es la que requeriría especial atención debido a su baja puntuación y a las posibilidades de mejora. Además, esta dimensión, junto con el PIB, tienen una relación estadísticamente significativa con la felicidad (considerada como proxy del bienestar subjetivo).
