Abstract

Modern acute care medicine and resuscitation can be complex, scary and perilous. However things need not be this way, and this concise practical handbook aims to help. Acute Care medicine requires skilled and knowledgeable clinicians. However, above all our patients need people who can function effectively in a team, manage stress, and prioritize what truly matters. The ability to work together can make the difference between a patient surviving or not, and the team remaining strong or falling apart. The goal of this practical book is to save lives. More specifically, it is to help acute care professionals optimize their crisis resource management skills and those of their team. "Optimizing Crisis Resource Management to Improve Patient Safety and Team Performance" was written by international experts in clinical and behavioural sciences and supported by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. It includes theoretical underpinnings and practical examples to help all acute care providers hone their skills in situational awareness, decision-making, verbal communication, task management, leadership and followership, and teamwork. The book’s concise, easy-to-access format applies to acute care settings worldwide. The e-version is also available on the Royal College website. Questions or comments: ppi@royalcollege.ca.
