Abstract

An article of this kind in a review such as Meta might well be seen as a sermon to the converted. Few indeed are the professional translators who have not had to grapple with the problems raised here. Meta, however, is not read only by translators : it reaches all kinds of people interested in the profession of translation - maybe even the representatives of some of our clients - who perhaps are not as aware as they should be of everything the practice of that profession involves. The problems discussed here are real. In more than one instance they have contributed toward professional demotivation. I feel it is time they were aired fully in public and if, in doing so, I can bring about just one "Damascus incident", my time will not have been wasted..
