Abstract
Background: Violence against women has a structural character. With regard to the corresponding help systems, there are only a few studies that survey the perspective of those affected. In the present study, those affected are asked about their subjective experience of the help process and their experiences made in the help system. Methods: In the context of this qualitative study, 17 problem-centered interviews were conducted with women affected by violence from Bremen and Bremerhaven, which were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Results: The interviewees often find it difficult to assess whether they have been affected by violence or not. This is especially true for forms of physically invisible, mental violence. In some areas of the help system, there is sometimes a lack of appropriate communication, which can lead to secondary victimization. In particular, the protection of women against violence is not sufficiently taken into account in the arrangement of the right of contact with the child (after separation and divorce). Conclusion: There is a need for differentiated information material on the various forms of violence, especially mental violence. In order to avoid secondary victimization, the offer of training, advanced training courses, etc. to sensitize counsellors in the help system should be expanded and promoted.
