Abstract
A needs analysis study was carried out to see the problems or issues in scientific investigation of form four Biology in Kinta Utara district which led to the need for the development of the BIOV-LabPRO module. This study was carried out qualitatively and quantitatively. A qualitative study using purposive sampling involved four teachers using a semi-structured interview method while a quantitative study involved 40 students as respondents for a student needs questionnaire. The results of the qualitative study were obtained based on the characteristics of the requirements stated by Morrison et. al that is (i) the existing needs of students and teachers, and (ii) the emotional needs of students and teachers. The existing needs of students and teachers are seen through topics that are difficult to teach and learn, teachers' teaching practices, students' learning experiences, teachers' teaching practices and problems encountered when teachers teach those topics. Feeling needs are the needs to improve self-performance seen through the needs expected by students when this topic is being taught and the needs of teachers in teaching. The quantitative study involved 8 questionnaire items that were analyzed descriptively through a percentage score consisting of four main criteria, namely need for scientific investigation practice, need for scientific creativity in scientific investigation, need for technology integration and the need for learning strategies. The results of analysis from all the items in the questionnaire show a high percentage and mean of the need for module development to implement the scientific investigation for form four biology. In conclusion, the problems and issues that exist lead to the need for the development of BIOV-LabPRO among form four Biology students in Kinta Utara district to improve the science process skills, scientific creativity, and students' interest in Biology.
