Abstract

This bibliographical study has as purpose to stress the urgent necessity of (re)creating the university within the current political, economic, social, technological and cultural context of Latin America. Taking into account the current context of neoliberal ideology and the globalization process that consider education as a merchandise, the author proposes a new way to conceive some of the most problematical matters that have been accompanying university throughout its whole history: mission, autonomy, government, financing, curriculum approach, research, update of the human resources and institutional assessment. This aspects are analyzed in a synoptic way and the author shows, within the current university structure, possible alternative paths in order to reach that university rethinks its own convictions and practices in order to achieve a better quality of teaching and to become more helpful to the sustainable development and to the improvement of the life conditions of the society as a whole. Finally the author presents, as a possible reflection, some matters that could be retaken for future researches.
