Abstract

Purpose: to analyze the limitations and possible alternatives for the urban planning and management of urban rainwater drainage systems in the municipalities of the Rio Mucuri/MG watershed. Theoretical framework: from a theoretical point of view, the research is guided by the socio-environmental approach to urban rainwater management and by an institutional perspective of drainage systems, focusing on regional peculiarities. Method: qualitative approach, through bibliographic study, data collection, cartographic and documentary elaboration and interpretation. Local samples were explored, comparing them with the technical concepts and results presented in the theoretical framework. Results and conclusion: In the municipalities studied, belonging to the Mucuri River watershed, storm drainage systems were planned in a traditional way, focusing on the local consequences of runoff and water flow, neglecting regional aspects and the hydrological cycle. The limited administrative control and lack of knowledge of the quantitative and qualitative aspects of the drainage system itself makes it difficult for municipalities to maintain it and prevents the adoption of an efficient preventive policy or risk management of landslides, floods or floods. Research implications: The research contributes to new academic studies, focusing on the socio-environmental aspects of urban rainwater drainage and for a perspective of sustainability of the new systems to be implemented in the municipalities, based on an integrated and regional planning. Originality/value: The article addresses the socio-environmental and regulatory aspects of urban stormwater drainage and management systems, demonstrating the need for an integrative and regional vision within the scope of urban management.
