Abstract

In the last two decades, there has been an increase in the number of tunnels globally, primarily due to the reduction of the length and costs of transport, the reduction of pollution and the improvement of air quality, and also for the preservation of the natural and urban entities that would be disturbed by the above-ground road infrastructure. Together with the number of tunnels, the number of complex and diverse equipment in tunnels is growing (video surveillance, ventilation, fire protection, lighting, signaling, air pollution measures, dynamic evacuation systems, etc.). Serbia has a large number of short tunnels without the minimum required equipment. On the other hand, tunnels on new sections of highways such as, for example, sections "Ljig-Preljina", contain all modern equipment, which are in accordance with the European directive. By implementing modern equipment and systems to other tunnels in accordance with their category, safety in tunnels in Serbia will significantly increase, by reducing the number of traffic accidents and their consequences. This paper presents the ITS technologies in tunnels as well as their application in Serbia.
