Abstract

In recent years, the development of Flash memory has shown remarkable progress in performance, that is high density like DRAM, single power supply of 3V, low power operation, and high reliability of exceeding 100,000 times programming and 10 years of data storage. Since Flash memory has been applied in the consumer and office equipment including a portable communication terminal, a rapid expansion of market is expected. Sharp has cooperated with Intel Corporation for development of high performance Flash memories that have leaded the industry as well as the basic element and device technology. As a result, 8M Flash memory of the smallest chip size is realized using the 0.4 micron process technology, This report describes positioning of Flash memory, its technology trend, Sharp's development effort, device features and their applications.
