Abstract

This report is the second volume of the Mapping the Field project. Volume I contains a number of databases covering bibliographies of academic publications and reports by NGOs and statutory bodies, lists of current research, key journals, websites, research centres and relevant organisations. Volume II aims to provide a more thorough review of a selection of the work mentioned in Volume I, and to supplement it so that together they make up an in-depth reference document that can be utilised to inform policy and future research related to integration. The works which were chosen for review were selected so as to present a representative sample of work across the field in five main subject areas of concern: general issues relating to these populations; education and training; labour market; health; and housing. n extensive literature review was undertaken to better inform the development of government policy relating to the integration of immigrants and refugees in Great Britain. The report begins with a detailed overview of the approach the authors used to search for and select relevant research. Chapter 3 surveys the literature on immigrant and refugee integration. Chapter 4 maps the actual research located with a thematic discussion of the literature. Chapter 5 highlights gaps located in the research literature. The authors present their conclusions in Chapter 6. The appendices include a useful profile of integration models used in selected host countries. The second part of the report includes bibliographies of the academic and NGO/agency materials identified for the study, as well as a list of current research, research centres, and key resources (periodicals, web sites, data sets and organizations). Over 3200 bibliographic references were surveyed. A selection of these studies was analyzed in greater detail in a second volume; see the separate entry for Fyvie et al., 2003. (Note: The page numbering in the report is erroneous.)
