Abstract

A unique method of upgrading a C-band EDFA into a highly efficient L-band EDFA is presented, incorporating a gain-clamped amplifier (ring laser) that acts as a gain-improving element in an unpumped erbium-doped fiber. A gain improvement of 17.8 dB and noise figures < 4.0 dB are measured for optimum settings.
