Seedlings of ten hardwood species were treated with 18 fumigation and acid rain treatments: 0.0, 0.07, and 0.15 ppm ozone; 0.0 and 0.02 ppm S02; and acid rain treatments with pH’s of 3.0, 3.5, and 4.2. The fumigation treatments were applied in CSTR fumigation chambers in a greenhouse. The seedlings received three days of fumigation plus 1.25 cm of acid rain per week for 16 weeks. Ozone and acid rain had significant impacts on one or more growth variables of six of the species listed. Air pollution injury was observed on yellow birch, red maple, yellow poplar, sweetgum, and white ash. © Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
