Polar bear predation on ringed seals in the fast-ice of Hornsund, Svalbard

Abstract

Ursus maritimus hunting success on Phoca hispida in subnivean lairs and basking on the fast ice, was studied. A total of 62 subnivean structures were entered by bears, with 6 seals killed. One of 10 changes on basking seals resulted in a kill.
