Abstract

Two of the four recreational fisheries in Kiel Bight were surveyed: angling for spring-spawning herring in Kiel harbour, and angling for cod the whole year round over deep water in the open Bight. From March to May 1984, herring anglers caught 71 tonnes. The total catch of cod by anglers was estimated to be 1100 t in 1985. This is 22% of the cod caught by professional fishermen from the Federal Republic of Germany in the Western Baltic during the same year. No undersized fish were taken by anglers. The yearly income of a cod-angling vessel from fees paid by the anglers is estimated to be 150000 DM. If the sale of tax-free articles is included, the income may reach the order of 600000 DM per boat. © 1988 Conseil International pour l'Exploration de la Mer.
