Abstract

The objective of this research and development was to produce a feasible science teaching material, and test the effectiveness in improving students’ higher-order thinking skill and scientific reasoning skills. The research design was 4D development of Thiagarajan, consisted of four steps that define, design, develop and disseminate. Tthe effectiveness was tested using a quasi-experimental design, by taking the experimental class and control class. Experimental class was using the results of the development of teaching materials, while the control class was using general teaching materials. The feasibility test of the developed science teaching material which consisted of textbooks and instructional media were 87.43% and 87.31% respectively. This means that the teaching material was feasible for use. The limited application of the teaching material showed an average score of 80.55%. The effectiveness test of the developed teaching material showed that there was difference between the control class and experimental class in students’ higher-order thinking skills and scientific reasoning skills. Science’s teaching teaching materials is effective in improving scientific reasoning skills and higher ordered thinking of junior secondary students
