Abstract
The concept of global citizenship has a substance that emphasizes the idea of belonging to the global society and in this context imposes a global role and responsibility on individuals. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the Social Studies Curriculum being implemented in Turkey (SSC, 2018) under the themes and type categories dealt with in the scope of global citizenship. The document review was utilized for the literature review of global citizenship and the evaluation of 2018 SSC. Descriptive analysis, on the other hand, was used in order to analyze the data. It was found that the content related to global citizenship education was included in the curriculum of social studies courses comprehensively. Nevertheless, it was also found that the curriculum should be developed in terms of the gains supporting the approaches such as global participation, searching for solutions to the common problems of the world, and aiming to develop the global perspective which are the key themes of global citizenship. In this sense, it was thought within the 2018 SSC that the roles and responsibilities of individuals at national and global level should be clearly revealed, without excluding the nation-state citizenship. Furthermore, it was thought that it would be beneficial to distribute the themes of global citizenship within itself in the curriculum in a more balanced way and consider the contents in the curriculum with a more systematic approach.
