Abstract
This primary aim of this study is to define a meta-model for designing educational software applications by including usability and pedagogical knowledge criteria to model easy-to-use teaching tools. Each relevant design element of an educational software application is conceptually described. Pre-conceptual schemas are selected as syntax models to represent identified elements and relationships since they can be easily exemplified by using instances and since they are computationally readable (e.g. executable) and easily understood. The meta-model is designed and validated. The results show that the meta-model improves the design of educational software applications. It is concluded that the meta-model contributes to the standardization of the design of educational software applications by ensuring the inclusion of usability and pedagogical knowledge criteria.
