Abstract
After reviewing the basic knowledge relating to filtration mechanisms and the characterizations of filter suspensions, the geometries enabling the high flux of the filtered matter to be satisfied are discussed. Tangential microfiltration is defined as a technique involving the creation, in the vicinity of the filtrating medium and parallel to it, of a shear constraint such that the deposition of the particles to be separated is prevented or at least controlled; this is obtained by relative motion of the suspension and the filtering medium. Various applications of tangential microfiltration are listed.
