Abstract

In the present work, radiation shielding features of some chemical compounds were studied in terms mass attenuation coefficient (µm), total atomic cross section (6t), electronic cross section (6e), effective atomic number (Zeff) and Effective electron density (Neff). Measurement was done using transmission experiment includes Nal (T;) detector and radioactive sources. Measured results of were compared with theoretical results obtained from XCOM code. Gamma ray sourcesemit energies 122KeV to 1330 KeV were used to irradiate inorganic materials. Behavior of the selected compounds with incident energy was studied in detailed. Obtained shielding parameters were observed to vary with the intensity of photons and decreased with increment of energy. From the measured results, it is observed that Barium sulfateand ferric oxide have the highest mass attenuation coefficient (µm) as compared to other materials. Finally, it was suggested that barium sulfate and ferric oxide are good candidates in the preparation of efficient gamma ray shielding materials.
