Future of AAC technologies: priorities for inclusive innovation

Abstract

Innovation of AAC technology is urgently needed as existing technology is not fully meeting the needs of the people who rely upon it. Given that real people have urgent needs for significant and effective solutions, it is important that work in innovating AAC emphasizes: intuitiveness, feasibility, sustainability, solutions for those who currently benefit the least from existing technologies, affordability, and parallel advocacy work for expanded AAC funding. Opportunities to innovate AAC technology are bountiful given the fast-paced technology innovation occurring outside of the field of AAC. Areas with strong potential to improve daily communication life in future research and development work include: AAC that is wearable or embedded into the environment, AAC that is more connected to the user and the environment, and AAC that leverages relevant advances from mainstream technology (e.g., new smartphone features; new extended reality capabilities). Innovation does not always result in improved outcomes. For this reason, it is critical that research and development is driven by the people who use the technology, responsive to their expertise, and addressing their most urgent needs. By working collaboratively with stakeholders, researchers and developers will be more likely to create a positive, lasting impact from their work.
